It’s a system, a tool kit, a recipe book. Beginning with one irresistible idea--a complete home bar of just 12 key bottles--here’s how to make more than 200 classic and unique mixed drinks, including sours, slings, toddies, and highballs, plus the perfect Martini, the perfect Manhattan, and the perfect Mint Julep. It’s a surprising guide--tequila didn’t make the cut, and neither did bourbon, but genever did. And it’s a literate guide--describing with great liveliness everything from the importance of vermouth and bitters (the “salt and pepper” of mixology) to the story of a punch bowl so big it was stirred by a boy in a rowboat.

I like the idea of setting up a bar with a specific set of liquors and having a bunch of really good drinks you can build a real repertoire from. The drinks are chosen carefully and each has its bit of trivia attached so you can come off sounding much smarter than you are. Bonus points for smaller bottle sets that can get you started at a lower price and/or smaller bar space because the small sets can also function for picnics and the like. Excellent book for novices as well as for pros looking to shake up their routine.
This is a great book for not only someone that wants to start a home bar but for someone that wants to learn a bit of history, many recipes (as well as versions of) and tips/tricks of the trade. This book is written very well, enjoyable to read and full of all kinds of information.I have always enjoyed a good cocktail, but they always seem to be shrouded in some secret bar tenders socity that makes it impossible to recreate at home. This unlocks the secrets and makes it easy and practical to do at home!!Congrats and thanks.
As someone getting into cocktail making and mixology, this was a perfect beginner book. The "12 bottle" part is a little bit deceiving because sometimes it calls for funky ingredients but I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn how to make cocktails. It also includes a walk-through of the different classes of cocktails (sours, old fashioneds, slings, etc) and the history behind each recipe.
An almost perfect home bar book! I especially am glad he included Genever as one of those bottles and left out Tequila. My only complaint, and it isn't really one, is there is quite a few smaller bottles (bitters, etc) needed for the cocktails, but his choices for the basic dozen are spot on. It's a book for grownups!
On the one hand, this is an excellent collection of relatively simple drinks. On the other hand, you can't just use the 12 Bottles and be done with the entire thing. You gotta make all these weird syrups and mixes
Bought this book as a gift but I had a chance to look through it. Great little beginning guide to building a home bar around 12 basic bottles with some good cocktail recipes. Will definitely come in handy.
Great book I'd recommend this to anyone wanting to start a nice home bar and the fact that they give different options from basic to top shelf. The plethora of recipes in each spirit category helps to keep things from getting confusing.
I really enjoyed the history of the different spirits and drinks, and it's a great resource on homemade mixers, syrups, and cordials. I wouldn't recommend this to someone who's looking for a strictly recipe book because the organization and variety of drinks in the book leave something to be desired.I'm also not a fan of the section on Genever, it just strikes me as pretentious (ooh look at this alcohol you've never heard of!).
